Great Lakes Exotic Plant Management Team (GL-EPMT)- Saint Croix Falls, WI. Major Duties: This position is in the Division of Resource Management and serves a network of 11 National Parks in teh Midwestern Upper Great Lakes.The employee performs as a member of the Great Lakes Exotic Plant Management Team field crew. Primary duties include removal of exotic plants using manual and chemical methods.
The employee performs exotic plant control through the use of herbicides and manual tools. The employee makes educated decisions to resolve problems in the field without direct supervision. He/she is expected to collect data using a GPS unit and must be able to identify exotic plants and native plants in the field. The employee may be called on to handle details regarding vehicle care, storage and use of pesticides, maintenance and use of spray equipment and hand tools, and documentation of fieldwork.
The duties of this position require the employee to be in good physical condition. Considerable time will be spent driving, hiking in hazardous terrain, and using tools and equipment. Field time will subject the employee to extreme weather conditions (i.e., temperatures over 100 degree F in the summer) and heavy insect outbreaks. Occasional time will also be spent in an office environment reviewing data, transcribing information, and maintaining equipment. Mental alertness, stability, and tact in dealing with program partners and the public are required. You must be able to obtain and maintain a pesticide applicator License.
Area Information: St. Croix National Scenic Riverway encompasses 92,746 acres in its authorized boundary and 230 miles of mostly free flowing river. It includes 130.5 miles of the St. Croix River, much of which forms the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, and all 99.5 miles of its largest tributary, the Name Kagon River in northwest Wisconsin. The park has diverse flora and fauna derived from a mixing of three major plant communities: prairie, northern hardwoods and boreal forest, primarily in a riverine setting. Summer daytime temperatures are mild, averaging 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit, and nighttime temperatures averaging 60-70 degrees. Employee will be based at the St. Croix River Visitor Center in St. Croix Falls, WI (pop. 2000). St. Croix Falls is about an hour northeast of the Twin Cities.
Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN)- Rapid City, SD. Major Duties: The Biological Technicians (plants) will help implement a long-term ecological monitoring program for vegetation in 13 park units in the Northern Great Plains. The incumbents visit field sites to collect extensive monitoring data on grasses, forbs, trees and shrubs, (identifying them to the species level) and fuel loads. The position will involve a combination of office work, field time, and travel to the parks. These positions work 10-hour days and require constant travel to parks within Nebraska, Wyoming, South and North Dakota. Crew members will be required to hike off trail with heavy packs, sometimes in extremely hot weather or through thick vegetation. The position will spend approximately 5-10% of time performing computer work. The anticipated field season is May through September.This position will assist the Botanist and Lead Biological Technician for plant monitoring in the following tasks:
Supervising plant data collection using established network monitoring protocols.Accurately identifying Northern Great Plains vegetation to the species level in the field or in the office using standard floras.Training crew members in appropriate data collection, entry, and verification methods.
Conducting fieldwork in remote backcountry settings and under difficult conditions in a safe and efficient manner. Ensuring crew safety. Entering data and following quality assurance procedures to ensure accurate data transcription into established databases. Maintaining field and camping equipment.

Physical Demands:
This position requires standing for long periods of time, up to 8 hours/day, both inside and outside, and is subject to adverse weather conditions including high temperatures and humidity, as well as the presence of poisonous plants and biting insects. The position also requires hiking, both on and off trails, up to 10 miles/day, up and down the mountains in the park (approximately 600 vertical feet) while carrying tools and other field equipment of up to 50 pounds.
For GL-EPMT you will be required to submit and pass a pre-employment physical examination.
Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep rocky terrain, forests, cave environments, and extreme heat and humidity. Flying in fixed and rotary wing aircraft is possible. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
