MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and administers a segment of a sports program for a military community.
Selects and emphasizes competitive sports activities to be offered, both within the required basic program categories and those additional ones possible through available resources and desirable in terms of participant's interests and needs.
Schedules and publicizes various tournaments, and other sports events.
Solicits volunteers and part-time paid service for activities.
Evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing sports activities from the standpoint of participants' response, resources, program objectives. Ensures playing surface is properly maintained, safe, and ready for play.
Responsible for scheduling of courts, track, and fields, and regularly inspects for repairs, cleanliness, etc.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work includes lifting up to 45 lbs. unassisted. Incumbent may lift heavier weight, but with assistance. Considerable amounts of standing and exercise demonstrations are required.
Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.
To sufficiently qualify an individual to perform their duties as a sports coordinator, a minimum of three years’ experience that demonstrates work experience in directing sports activities and a proficiency in developing a sports programs tailored to the needs of the participants. A degree in physical education from an accredited college in Physical Education may be substituted for two years of experience.
Staff qualifications will vary significantly, depending on the type of participant accepted by the facility. Facilities that offer programs designed to appeal to children, older participants or to participants with known health problems; the staff should have special qualifications, usually an advanced, clinically-oriented certification from a nationally recognized professional organization.
Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain the following within 60 days of hire:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid Certification
Automated External Defibrillator Certification
Blood-borne PathogenTraining
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Ability to competently and independently carry out sports programs through the proper application of principles, concepts and techniques of recreation to satisfy specific needs of the community to be served.
Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced program which meets the needs of the participating community.
Skill and ability to provide sports training and programming to individuals and groups of various sizes.
Knowledge of safe use and operation of equipment, facility operations, and basic equipment maintenance/repair.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports related to work within the Branch.
Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Works under direct supervision of the Fitness Director or Fitness Coordinator. Incumbent uses initiative in completing daily/routine assignments and receives general guidance and supervision. Work is subject to periodic spot checks. Supervisor provides advice/guidance regarding special problems or unusual situations.
Work consists of providing sports information for the physiological needs of each customer and/or command. The development and implementation of the program must be unique. Incumbent interacts with a wide variety of patrons who seek recommendations. Incumbent stays up to date on basic information pertaining to the branch and actively promotes programs and MWR events.
