The Physician Assistant has with advanced clinical knowledge and competence to function in a variety of roles in advanced cardiac valve disease. She/he is accountable for the management and evaluation of patient care under her/his care. She/he holds clinical privileges and practices in collaboration with a physician.
The Physician Assistant provides and oversees the care of cardiology valve patients under the supervision of the Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery faculty. The care provided may include inpatient care service when patients are admitted and during discharge to assure smooth transitions and liaison with Primary Care Providers and consultants, tele-health and home care agencies. The Physician Assistant will primarily function as the cardiac valve PA for the transcutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVR) program. The PA will provide guidance and continuity for the cardiology and cardiac surgery teams in their provision of care to patients. She/he will help the teams to address all aspects of care including ensuring adequate imaging and other preliminary studies are completed and available for the teams, prescribing medications for inpatients and outpatients who are evaluated by the TAVR and Valve clinic teams, and planning discharge for patients who have had the TAVR procedure. The PA will promote safe practices as well as the encouragement of effective use of V.A. resources. In addition, the PA may interact and help in the provision of other cardiology care by the other cardiology PA/NP'S. The Physician Assistant is prepared by advanced practice in adult health care across the health continuum. This practice includes independent and interdependent decision making, and direct accountability for clinical judgment. Graduate preparation expands the comprehensiveness of the PAs role, which includes: participating in and use of research; and development and implementation of health policy, leadership, education, case management, and consultation. The PA should have experience as a cardiology PA and preferably with experience in managing cardiac valve disease.
