As a Nuclear Policy Advisor at the GS-0301-15 some of your typical work assignments may include:
-Assists in the preparation of congressional testimony, reports, and responses to inquiry by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (VCJCS), and other senior military members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) on matters of nuclear policy, strategy, plans, and requirements.
-Serves as a senior nuclear policy and strategy adviser and senior strategic planner providing advice and expertise on a broad range of nuclear policy, strategy, plans, and doctrine.
-Supports the CJCS in the role as adviser to the Secretary of Defense (SecDef) in both the SecDef's interagency capacity as the NCCS Executive Agent and in his/her capacity as the senior Department of Defense (DoD) official tasked with responsibilities under Presidential Policy Directive/PPD 35, United States Nuclear Weapons Command and Control, Safety, and Security.
-Reviews and edits reporting requirements of the NCCS governance bodies including the NWC's Report on Stockpile Assessment (ROSA), Chairman's Annual Report to Congress (CARC), Joint Surety Report (JSR), and Nuclear Weapons Stockpile Memorandum (NWSM) and Requirements Production Document (RPD).
-Applies subject matter expertise and collaborates with a broad community of interagency stakeholders as needed to develop recommendations pertaining to the formulation of national-level policies, strategies, and doctrine across specified areas of responsibility, as well as recommendations for CJCS advice to the National Security Council (NSC), SecDef, and the President on developing or modifying nuclear weapons policy, counter-nuclear terrorism policy and counter-weapons of mass destruction proliferation policy.
-Synthesizes information from a wide range of sources on U.S. nuclear force structure, posture, plans, and capabilities; the role of nuclear forces in U.S. military strategy; policy requirements and objectives for the U.S. to maintain a safe, secure, reliable, and effective strategic deterrent and to reassure U.S. allies and partners.
-Supports and participates in all relevant meetings, reviews all assigned materials, and ensures that CJCS, VCJCS, and Joint Staff equities are addressed on all matters pertaining to nuclear weapons policy, strategy, plans, and doctrine.
-Collaborates with Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) as needed to develop best military advice regarding capabilities needed to ensure the authorized employment and termination of nuclear weapons under all threats and scenarios; to secure against the accidental, inadvertent, or unauthorized access to U.S. nuclear weapons; and prevent the loss of control, theft, or unauthorized use of U.S. nuclear weapons.
