This full-time, permanent position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in the Rehabilitation and Extended Care Line (RECL). The therapist is assigned the responsibilities of planning, developing, and implementing effective evaluation and treatment programs in the delivery of Occupation Therapy services primarily for patients assigned to the HBPC programs. This therapist may also provide Occupational Therapy services, as needed, to patients referred to OT and not enrolled in the home care programs. The incumbent serves as a liaison for Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation and Extended Care Line in the HBPC program and functions as a member of the HBPC multidisciplinary specialty care team and other patient care teams as needed to provide quality, effective, and efficient patient centered care. Duties include, but are not limited to:
*Works under the guidance of a referral/consult from a physician or other approved provider.
*Reviews medical records and utilizing appropriate tests, independently evaluates the patient to determine functional limitations and strengths.
*Interprets evaluation findings and establishes the best method to accomplish functional patient centered goals.
*Screen prospective patients for inclusion in HBPC program.
*Serves as resource for OT in Home Care within HBPC and in the CBOC's.
*Reports to appropriate team member decline in function or significantly altered physical or mental status of patients.
*Applying recognized treatment procedures, modifying them as necessary to avoid interference with traction devices, surgical drains, catheters, etc.
*Completes functional assessments using approved measure (FIM).
*Completes home accessibility and safety assessments.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Alternate work schedule may be considered.
Functional Statement Title: Occupational Therapist
Physical Requirements: Regular moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), with occasional heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds (such as when transferring patients or moving equipment); daily, varying periods of sitting, standing, bending, walking, squatting/stooping, twisting, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching over shoulders; fine manipulation required intermittently (up to 2-3 hours per day).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

EXPERIENCE (OR ADDITIONAL EDUCATION) REQUIRED One year of progressively-complex and broad OT experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, OR three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a degree in OT or a directly-related field.
DEMONSTRATED KSA's REQUIRED All of the following KSA's must be fully demonstrated:
1. Knowledge of advanced OT techniques to perform functions associated with the OT scope of practice
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing
3. Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further, in-depth/specific assessment of function and to utilize non-standard methods and techniques
4. Knowledge of principles and techniques in the OT assessment and treatment of occupational, cognitive, and psychological functional deficits
5. Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care providers
6. Ability to facilitate and instruct in-service and clinical training programs
7. Knowledge and ability to apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and environmental maintenance
Note: Completion of a post-graduate fellowship or a post-graduate residency program may substitute for creditable experience on a year-for-year basis.
