The position is located at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), assigned to the Surgical Care Line reporting to the Chief of Surgery. The American Board of Surgery (ABS) states that general surgery is a discipline having a central core of knowledge embracing anatomy, physiology, metabolism, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing, shock and resuscitation, and intensive care and neoplasia, which are common to all surgical specialties. Furthermore, the ABS holds that the general surgeon is an individual who has specialized knowledge and skills relating to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management in the following areas: alimentary track; abdomen and its contents; breasts; skin and soft tissue; head and neck (including trauma, vascular, congenital and oncologic disorders - particularly tumors of the skin, salivary glands, thyroid, parathyroid, and the oral cavity); vascular system (excluding the intracranial vessels, the heart, and those vessels immediately adjacent thereto); endocrine system; surgical oncology (including coordinated multimodality management of the patient by screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy; rehabilitation, and follow-up). The responsibility for all phases of care of the injured patient is an essential component of general surgery; as well as complete care of critically ill patients with underlying surgical conditions in emergency departments and intensive care units.-Duties include, but are not limited to:
-Leadership in the application of Evidence-Based Medicine to in-patient and outpatient client care, organizational processes and/or systems, improving outcomes at service level.
-Knowledge to implement an educational plan to meet changing program or service needs for self and others.
-Knowledge of current techniques, trends, and professional issues related to General Surgery care and performance measures related to General Surgery.
