Duties include:
-Performs projects combining skill and knowledge of a variety of trade functions (e.g., welding, metal surface treating, metal working, machining, and electrical work) to resolve a wide variety of complex problems associated with special modifications and/or repairs to meet critical requirements in support of the Service’s protective vehicle fleet and protective operations; plans and lays out complete models, assemblies, and subassemblies to reproduce scale designs and to plan work requirements.
-Plans, fabricates, repairs, replaces, and installs a variety of specialized metal parts and assemblies (e.g., reinforced tailgate switches, push latches, internal and outer handrails and handholds, gun racks, communications equipment racks and boxes, prisoner insert panels, etc.) from sheet metal for the armored limousines, Suburbans, protective follow-up vehicles and police cruisers.
-Fortifies, installs, and rewires modified parts and assemblies (grills, lights, sirens, radio equipment, exhaust systems, panels, and tailgates) with extra steel and welds without altering the design of the special purpose vehicle.
-Uses a variety of welding techniques and processes such as electric arc gas, metal arc, gas tungsten arc, gas carbon arc, and plasma arc, etc. in performing necessary welding modifications and repairs to armored and protective vehicles, and Uniformed Division cruisers and motorcycles also skilled in using tools such as soldering irons, welding equipment, bonding and brazing equipment and the full variety of metal working machines.
Conditions of Employment If selected for this position, you will be required to:
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation.

Work inside a shop area that may be noisy and dirty, and occasionally outdoors, assignments involve exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches and heated materials, solvents, paints and other chemicals; work enviornment is subject to the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, broken bones, and the chance of cuts when working with sharp objects; and there is discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, hard hat, flash shield or safety glasses as required by changing assignments.
Stand, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, pull and push at various stages of assignments to assemble items and install assemblies; work may be done in awkward and cramped positions such as when welding in hard to reach places; and frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds without the assistance of lifting devices
