These are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

As a uniformed Park Guide at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site you will be responsible to deliver interpretive programs, publications and digital products to educate visitors and protect historic resources. Park Guides identify and utilize primary and secondary source materials to develop interpretive tours and talks; research, prepare, and conduct a variety of interpretive tours and talks for a diverse audience that includes children and adults, individually and in groups that are: appropriate for the audience, historically accurate, professionally and creatively delivered, and that contribute to visitor understanding and appreciation of Park resources. You independently present a variety of tours, talks and briefings and respond to visitor questions. You use common software applications, digital media and media platforms to produce interpretive products. Presentations and interpretive product primarily concern the life of Martin Van Buren, antebellum politics, park orientation and visitor safety. You explain the area's historic and natural resources and recreational opportunities. You provide information on current park events, projects, and policies, as well as updates on issues affecting the historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Park guides work in or near the park visitor center, and inside the historic mansion. This position requires a familiarity with arming and disarming common alarm systems. Efficient operation of a cooperating association bookstore requiring skill in reconciling daily receipts, monitoring inventory and accurately completing journal and database entries is necessary. Judgment is required in all areas to determine work priorities in the absence of the supervisor to assure high quality visitor services and safety. Other duties include visitor services such as writing, traffic control, administrative tasks, set-up and staffing of special events.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing for long periods of time, walking for as much as three miles daily, repeatedly climbing stairs, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors at the visitor center and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
Tours are conducted in historic structures which are not air conditioned. Inside is often uncomfortable as a result.
