The Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans throughout Alaska. The parent facility is located in Anchorage, Alaska and is adjacent to the 673d Medical Group, Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson which is a VA/DoD Joint Venture Hospital. We manage four VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), located in Fairbanks (358 miles north of Anchorage), Kenai (158 miles south of Anchorage), Wasilla (41 miles north of Anchorage) and Juneau (569 air miles from Anchorage). We manage a VA Outreach clinic located in Homer and served by staff from the Kenai VA CBOC We also manage a 50 bed Domiciliary for homeless veteran's located in downtown Anchorage. Anchorage is a mid-sized city of approximately 292,000, with all of the modern amenities expected, including shopping, dining, cultural opportunities, entertainment, and public transportation. Leave the traffic jams and commuter stress behind and enjoy the scenic mountains or Cook Inlet views as you travel around the area. Within 15-20 minutes you can be in the Alaska wilderness of the Chugach National and State Forests, with little evidence of civilization. Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, skiing, climbing, golf, tennis, recreational leagues and wildlife photography are all pursuits available in or near Anchorage. The University of Alaska Anchorage provides educational opportunities for continued personal education and growth.
Alaska has no state income tax and Anchorage has no sales tax.
Positions in Alaska receive a tax free Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. The COLA for Anchorage is currently 4.22% and is subject to change in the future.

The Registered Nurse will act as the Nurse Manager, Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (MHRRTP) and is responsible for the day to day operational issues in relation to assessing, planning, and managing of programmatic mental health services for Veterans at the Anchorage Alaska Health Care System. The nurse manager ofMHRRTP must maintain clinical privileges and clinical competencies by providing direct psychiatric services oversight and clinic operations. Incumbent is expected to provide direct patient care services at minimum of I0% or as determined by the Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Health (ACOS-MH) in support of the Clinic operations.
The Nurse Manager reports to the Chief, MHRRTP and receives clinical oversight from the Chief MHRRTP. The Nurse Manager MHRRTP will be expected to work independently as part of the MHRRTP management team. He/sh e will provide programmatic leadership and oversight of the administration of nursing staff and AMSA's as assigned to the MHRRTPs which includes the Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans, (DCHV) the Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP) and the Compensated Work Therapy Transitional Residence (CWTffR). The MHRRTP Nurse Manager ensures adequate resource availability and assures effective and efficient resource use and allocation. Examples may include, but are not limited to, collaboration with Service-level Chiefs regarding workload management, productivity management, and panel management. The MHRRTP Nurse Manager directs resources to ensure applicable quality measures are maintained at an acceptable level as defined by the Performance Measures Technical Manual and other applicable standards of practice guidelines. He/she also ensures that quality measure fallouts from External Peer Review Program (EPRP) audits are reviewed and appealed as appropriate in a timely fashion within their areas of responsibility. The MHRRTP Nurse Manager develops operational strategies to ensure organizational goals are met relative to their areas of responsibilities. The MHRRTP Nurse Manager is responsible for articulating the mission and vision of Mental Health Services, developing the functional statements or scopes of practice for all nurses and AMSAs in the MHRRTPs, designing a service plan, and assuring implementation of quality improvement measures. He/she is responsible for developing, planning, clarifying, administering and coordinating nursing services in the MHRRTPs.
Services are provided in the Anchorage VA MHRRTPs to include the DCHV and SARRTP located at 300I C Street Anchorage Alaska and the CWTffRs located at 709 North Hoyt Street, and 932 and 944 E. 121h Avenue Anchorage Alaska. He/she makes professional decisions and recommendations with infrequent recourse to supervisory guidance. The MHRRTP Nurse Manager serves as the liaison to MH service-level Chiefs (Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Homeless, Residential) and other Services, facilities, and Vet Centers on nursing care issues within the MHRRTPs. The MHRRTP Nurse Manager is responsible for advising the ACOS -MH of specific clinical or administrative issues within the MHRRTPs. Additionally, the position serves as a consultant and advisor to subordinates,peers, and administration. Additionally, the MHRRTP Nurse Manager may serve on various VISN-level and Facility level committees including the Mental Health Executive Council, Quality Committee, Director's Committee, and other committee assignments.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Must be able to lift at least 45 pounds. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
