Incumbent is responsible for developing, organizing and administering Recreation/Creative Arts program to provide therapeutic treatment to patients in various areas. Performs administrative and other duties related to the position. Incumbent performs duties with coaching and mentoring of the Recreational Therapy Supervisor or Recreational Therapy mentor /coach. Administers, Scores, and interprets a variety of standardized and non-standardized tests. Performs interviews, inventories, tests, and measurements to evaluate mental, emotional, social and physical capabilities of patients to determine the needs in recreation therapy. Guides recreation therapy assistants in the correct methods of administering and interpreting test results. Uses effective interviewing techniques. Observes the patient during trial assignments. Develops treatment plans using patient's assessment and physician or other rehabilitation team members therapy referrals. Develops short and long-term goals and objective with patients assigned. Coordinates the overall treatment plan with the treatment team and family's/caregiver. Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. Plans activities directed towards achieving such therapeutic objectives. Establishes programs or activities to meet program objectives and patients' goal. Integrates recreation therapy into overall team treatment plans. Coordinates activities with other services in the development of patient's treatment programs. Modifies techniques and develops new approaches. Contributes to develop criteria for the Recreation Therapy Service's quality improvement activities. Incumbent develops treatment plans with unique treatment interventions, objectives or activities with coaching/mentoring of the RT Supervisor. Uses a variety of recreation therapy modalities with patients having multiple physical, emotional and social disabilities. Implements conventional and/or innovative therapy activities. Provides the equipment, materials, instruction, encouragement, or counseling for therapeutic activities. Reviews patient' s progress, discusses progress with treatment multi-disciplinary team, suggests modifications. Evaluates and modifies treatment for veterans with multiple conditions. Performs assessments and leisure analytical evaluations. Incumbent adjusts treatment plans with coaching/mentoring of RT Supervisor.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing, walking or sitting for prolonged periods of time, frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; pushing or pulling heavy object; leading or directing physical exercise. It also involves lifting and repositioning patients with knowledge and use of safe patient transfer techniques. If the incumbent is involved in facilitating the Aquatics Therapy Program. some of the above mentioned demands will be done in the water. Driving an official vehicle to perform off station recreational activities is required for therapists assigned to specific programs. Work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity to perform intricate therapy procedures, as well as skills and abilities in the therapist creative arts discipline.
