Crisis Negotiators are responsible for responding to and resolving barricade situations, hostage situations, attempted suicides and other crisis situations. Intensive training is provided to obtain the critical skills and abilities to conduct these responsibilities. This position is a collateral duty assignment.
The incumbent is responsible for assisting in coordinating negotiations and crisis interventions during critical incidents and identifying resources required for the safe resolution of the incident.
Multiple vacancies exist. The number of Crisis Negotiator positions will be determined by the needs of the Department. The selection list will be active for a period of one (1) year from the date of approval of the selection memorandum unless an applicant withdraws in writing his/her application to the Office of Human Resources (OHR).

Defuses potentially life threatening situations through the use or proven verbal crisis management techniques.
Responsible for keeping notes, and ensuring that the primary negotiator sees and hears everything in the proper prospective.
Responsible for assisting in coordinating negotiations and crisis interventions during critical incidents.
Performs overall duties related to the mission of the USCP and crisis negotiations.
Participates on a continuous in-service training and all other activities designated by the Crisis Negotiation Commander.
1. Must successfully complete all required job-related training.
2. Must be able to remain on call and subject to immediate recall to duty.
3. Must be able to work closely with supervisors, peers and officials.
4. Must maintain the necessary skill sets required for a crisis negotiator through basic and continuous in-service training, seminars and other activities designated by the Crisis Negotiator Commander.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
The following selection process will be used to further assess candidates who have met the initial eligibility factors. Candidates must qualify under Phase I and Phase II to be considered in subsequent phases.
Phase I: Initial Qualification - The Office of Human Resources (OHR) will conduct an eligibility factor review as outlined in this vacancy announcement. In consultation with the OHR, a review of all candidates' personnel jackets and unscheduled leave will be conducted by an appointed assessment panel.
Phase II: KSA Self-Assessment - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) will be evaluated by an appointed assessment panel.
Knowledge of incident command systems (ICS) procedures and protocols.
Ability to perform work in stressful situations while remaining conscientious about attention to detail.
Ability to use appropriate interpersonal styles and techniques to defuse crisis or emergency situations.
Ability to respond to a potential crisis situation in a collaborative manner with members of the public and other law enforcement officials.
Phase III: Structured interview - Candidates eligible for Phase III will be scheduled for an oral interview.
Candidates will complete a short active listening skills scenario at the completion of the oral interview.
Results of this selection process will be used to recommend candidates to the hiring manager who is the final selecting official. The OHR will conduct a disciplinary action review. The hiring manager at his/her discretion may elect not to select a recommended candidate for reasons such as: substandard performance, serious sustained misconduct, or pending investigations internally or externally.
