The Earth Science Division (Code SG) within the Science Directorate (Code S) is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Deputy Division Chief. The incumbent supports the division operations and provides scientific and technical leadership in atmospheric and biospheric science. Earth systems science research at Ames is the foundation for the division's leading-edge capabilities in airborne science and information technology. The Deputy works closely with the Division Chief, Branch Chiefs, and division staff to manage operations and cultivates existing and new scientific and/or technical research activities aligning with NASA Earth science focus areas in atmospheric composition, weather, climate variability & change, water & energy cycle, carbon cycle & ecosystems, Earth surface & interior. He/she forecasts and plans the division priorities under the direction of Center and Headquarters management. This position is responsible for assuring that the division's staff is cognizant with the Agency and Ames policies and regulations. He/she is responsible for developing and monitoring performance metrics for the Division; supervises and/or performs a variety of technical managerial functions typically in two or more areas of: resource analysis, technical management systems, technical engineering operations management, configuration management, and/or serving as assistant to a technical program/project manager, or higher level line manager.

As the deputy division chief, the incumbent serves as an expert consultant on broad projects and programs with national impact in Earth science. He/she maintains close contact with Headquarters, field centers, commercial industry representatives, management and international partners for elements in advanced scientific areas. The incumbent works closely with Earth Science Division program managers to define program requirements and work to align Ames staff and facilities to meet requirements. The deputy participates as a presenter in national/international seminars and symposia relating to fields of expertise in scientific research in Earth science. The deputy works closely with the Division/Branch Chiefs, and division staff to manage operations and, cultivates existing and new scientific and/or technical research activities aligning with NASA Earth science focus areas in atmospheric composition, weather, climate variability & change, water & energy cycle, carbon cycle & ecosystems, Earth surface & interior. He/she consults with management and planning personnel in preparing requirements and criteria for complex or high value projects or investigations; provides guidance, leadership and technical advice to employees and specialists within Earth science. The incumbent collaborates with engineers, scientists, and educators who are experts in related fields to maintain awareness of the latest trends and innovations in the field of Earth science. The incumbent serves as recognized leader in Earth science and publishes and/or presents data that has a far-reaching effects in areas of Earth science. He/she maintains leading-edge capability in an Earth science discipline by serving on scientific review panels and planning and coordination committees. Facilitates internal and external outreach activities to broadcast and share project plans and scientific outcomes.
He/she develops and manages technical aspects of contracts, grants, proposals, cooperative agreements, and evaluates research proposals between the agency or organization and U.S. and foreign universities, governments, industries, companies, or non-profit organizations. The deputy keeps the Contracting Officer informed on progress, proposed contract modifications, validity of claims, analysis of proposals, and assessment of contract time extensions. The deputy monitors, and examines division budgets, conducts analyses within the NASA financial system, supports research proposal development with budget preparation, and manages resources for division operations in coordination with Directorate and Division Resource Managers. He/she is responsible for informing and advising the Division Chief and Branch Chiefs on financial status for the purpose of decision making, planning and improving financial management. The deputy is responsible for developing and monitoring performance metrics for the Division; supervises and/or performs a variety of technical managerial functions typically in two or more areas of: resource analysis, technical management systems, technical engineering operations management, configuration management, and/or serving as assistant to a technical program/project manager, or higher level line manager.
The incumbent also performs a full range of supervisory duties which include assigning and evaluating work; recommending personnel actions involving appointments, reassignments, promotions and awards; taking disciplinary actions; and identifying training needs and developing employees. Establishes guidelines and performance expectations for staff members, observes workers' performance, and demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques. Resolves informal complaints and grievances. Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters. Assures that staff is trained and fully comply with the provisions of safety regulations.
