This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program management (IFPM) Standard. This position has been categorized as a Supervisory Fire Engine Operator and requires selectee to meet the minimum qualification standards for IFPM prior to being placed into the position. These are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Division of Fire and Aviation is April to October, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Major Duties
More than one position: either at the North Rim or at the South RIm of the Grand Canyon
The selectee will be responsible for leading and directing other crew members in wildfire activities on one or more Type III or IV engines. Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, ensuring the correct positioning, proper use, and operation. Personally performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments for effective use of water and foam additives. Responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Maintains currency as a fully qualified chain saw operator.
Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. Makes initial evaluation of wildland fires, determines rates of spread, potential hazards, methods of fire management, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, types of tools to use, recommends strategies and tactics for management of wildland fires.
Participates in formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations. Leads and participates in wildland fire and safety training. Participates in crew proficiency drills. Ensures own and other's welfare and safety in all aspects of assignments.
Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fires.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION FOR BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH RIM:
This position is stationed at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 60 miles north of Williams and 85 miles northwest of Flagstaff at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 85 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Grand Canyon Village has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, a clinic with resident physicians and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 2,000 people, including employees of the NPS and concessionaires and their family members. There are often employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. The park community is small enough that many employees choose to walk or bike from their homes to work. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Williams and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities include hiking, river rafting, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
This position is located at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, which receives, approximately, 400,000 visitors between May 15 and October 15. The North Rim Unit of Grand Canyon National Park is 215 miles from Grand Canyon Village (4 hours by car). Elevation is 8000 feet, with temperatures ranging from -5 degrees in the winter to the mid-80's in the summer. During summer months, concession facilities are available, such as a restaurant, a small market, cabins and gas station. No schools are available near the North Rim. The nearest established community with a full range of services is Kanab, Utah 80 miles to the north.
Permanent employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared quarters. Bidding on available housing is very competitive, and permanent employees may be assigned shared quarters until other housing becomes available. Because of our housing shortage, when a permanent employee is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.You will be required to operate a fire engine and various motor vehicles as part of your official duties; a valid Commercial Driver's License is required. If using a valid Driver's License with Firefighter endorsement to qualify, you will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License [within 90 days of employment]. You will be required to submit your Commercial Driver's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
Selectees will be expected to travel in (not pilot) a small single-engine aircraft.
ill be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
Subject to frequent extended travel up to 14 nights a month particularly during fire season, and you must obtain a government charge card for travel.
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Employees required to pass a WCT-Pack Test as a "condition of employment" will be provided one opportunity to pass the required test with a second chance provided at the discretion of management based on the results of the first test. This recruitment notice constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements. NOTE: Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement. Probationary or seasonal employment is subject to termination for failure to meet the 25th percentile in each of the identified component being measured.

Physical Demands: Arduous: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on incumbent during fire activities.
Working Conditions: The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Personnel must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of work requires that personal protective equipment be work (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
