WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL PARKS AREA INFORMATION:
Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site (ALPO): The Allegheny Portage Railroad was the first railroad constructed over the Allegheny Mountains. This inclined plane railroad operated between 1834 and 1854 and was considered a technological wonder in its day and played a critical role in opening the interior of the United States to trade and settlement. The Site interprets and preserves this early 19th century engineering achievement and the story of the people who built and used it. Duty station: Gallitzin, PA
Flight 93 National Memorial (FLNI): On September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a grassy field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania shattering the quiet of the rural countryside. Those who rushed to the scene looked on in disbelief at charred trees and a smoldering crater. The community, like countless others across the nation, was shaken by the crash and the unimaginable violence and destruction al-Qaeda terrorists brought to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But as the day unfolded, this common field revealed a compelling story of courage and hope. Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard on Flight 93, the planned attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted. The Memorial is a tribute to the forty passengers and crew of Flight 93 and is a place to explore this inspiring story. Duty Station: Stoystown, PA
Fort Necessity National Battlefield (FONE) On July 3, 1754, in the wilderness of the Allegheny Mountains, Colonial troops commanded by 22 year old Colonel George Washington were defeated in this small stockade at the "Great Meadow". This opening battle of the French and Indian War began a seven year struggle between Great Britain and France for control of North America. Great Britain's success in this war helped pave the way for the American Revolution. At the Education Center and reconstructed fort visitors learn of the sacrifices made by the soldiers, officers and warriors that set the stage that led to American Independence. Duty Station: Farmington, PA
Friendship Hill National Historic Site (FRHI) Friendship Hill National Historic Site preserves the country estate of Albert Gallatin, a Swiss emigrant who served his adopted nation during the early years of the republic. Gallatin is best remembered for his thirteen year tenure as Secretary of the Treasury during the Jefferson and Madison administrations. In that time he reduced the national debt, purchased the Louisiana Territory and funded the Lewis & Clark exploration. Gallatin's accomplishments and contributions to the late 18th and early 19th century American Republic are highlighted through exhibits and programs presented in his restored Friendship Hill house. Duty Station: Point Marion, PA
Johnstown Flood National Memorial (JOFL) The story of the Johnstown Flood has everything to interest the modern mind: a wealthy resort, an intense storm, an unfortunate failure of a dam, the destruction of a working class city, and an inspiring relief effort. When it happened, May 31, 1889, an era of the Conemaugh Valley's history ended, and another era started. Johnstown Flood commemorates the more than 2,200 lives lost in the flood and preserves the ruins of the South Fork Dam and historic structures associated with the South Fort Fishing and Hunting Club. Duty Station: St. Michael, PA
