Relocation: Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.
Both parks are located on the island of Oahu in Honolulu. WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument (formally known as the USS Arizona Memorial) is located approximately six miles from downtown Honolulu. Honouliuli NM is a relatively new national monument, not yet open to the public, located at the site of a former civilian internment and prisoner of war camp; it is located approximately 23 miles from Honolulu, beyond Pearl Harbor. Honolulu is the capital and the largest city in the state of Hawaii, with a population of 350K. All amenities that large cities offer can generally be found in Honolulu. Public bus transportation is available to all VALR employees free of charge, and the bus provides transportation throughout the island of Oahu. Basic monthly apartment rental starts at around $1500. Trips to neighboring islands are extremely affordable. Mountain and ocean recreation opportunities are never far away. Working at these two parks is a great opportunity to work side-by-side with Pearl Harbor survivors and survivors of the Honouliuli internment camp, and to hear their accounts of WWII first-hand.

This position is the Chief of Cultural and Natural Resource Management and reports directly to the park superintendent. As a member of the Park Leadership Team you will be the lead advocate and technical adviser for resource management issues. You will be required to plan, implement, manage, coordinate and supervise a comprehensive natural and cultural resource program for two parks; manage complex budgets; work with other managers to establish policies, goals and objectives, operating procedures, guidelines, and internal controls; develop and maintain effective working relations with the State Historic Preservation Division, Historic Hawaii Foundation, the U.S. Navy, community stakeholders that represent the diversity of populations held at Honouliuli Internment Camp, Native Hawaiian Organizations, other agencies, and the public; ensure legal compliance with all NAGPRA, NEPA, Section 106 and ARPA issues; and conduct and coordinate the review of park projects to assure protection of natural and cultural resources and compliance with applicable federal laws. Responsibilities also include submitting funding requests and providing oversight on projects addressing deferred maintenance on the park's historic structures. Projects completed by this position insure preservation of culturally significant assets and correct safety deficiencies that put employees and park visitors at risk.

Physical Requirements: Work is conducted in the office as well as in a tropical environment as noted below. Some of the work will require that you carry loads up to 50 pounds while hiking over uneven terrain.
Working Conditions: Both parks are located in a tropical environment, subject to hurricanes and tropical storms. WWII Valor in the Pacific NM is a very busy, compact, managed landscape that receives over 1.7 million visitors per year. Honouliuli NM lies within a remote, hot, humid gulch; the landscape is heavily vegetated, contains many hidden hazards such as barbed wire and overgrown wells, and is frequented by mosquitoes, spiders, centipedes, wild boar, and other potentially dangerous wildlife. Your work will be conducted in these locations as well as in an office environment
