TEMPORARY 1039 APPOINTMENT: These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Gettysburg National Military Park is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Incumbent performs the following tasks encountered in the operations of the Maintenance Division in the Landscape Preservation Branch: rakes, sweeps, mows, and trims landscaped grounds using walking or riding power equipment up to and including 18 HP riding type and walk behind mowers, equipped with 42-inch mower decks and bagger attachments; operates trucks up to 1 ton capacity equipped with four-wheel drive; collects trash and litter from receptacles at buildings and roadside areas and on park grounds; helps with leaf removal using hand tools and power brooms; performs routine grounds maintenance including, but not limited to raking roadsides and ditches, patching holes in paving, repairing stone lanes and trails, removing hazardous trees, clearing vista, and removing vegetation; applies approved chemicals for the control of unwanted vegetation; performs fence construction and repairs both historic and non-historic fences; performs routine maintenance and repair of all equipment in scope of operations; cares for plants and shrubs including weeding, mulching, watering, and plant food application; minor painting and masonry duties when needed.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: The incumbent is required to stretch, stoop, crawl, climb, kneel and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries up to 100 pounds. Must be physically able to operate heavy mowers and weed eaters. Must be able to engage in strenuous physical labor such as shoveling gravel, topsoil, etc.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors. Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
