This position is located in Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site, in the Maintenance Division.
This position being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. This is an Excepted Service, temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year. This appointment may be extended each year without further competition, as long as the incumbent continues to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available. Your internship and employment with us will be terminated either upon completion of your education program or failure to comply with Pathways requirements.
This is a part time position, working 32 hours per week.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Operates heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand tools (such as shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc. Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. and moves furniture. Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel; mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads. Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling. Cuts heavy trees with axe or chainsaw; stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort
Physical Demands: The work performed requires exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside and it frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment.

Grant - the victorious Civil War general who saved the Union and the 18th President of the United States. He first met Julia Dent, his future wife, at her family home, named White Haven. From 1854 to 1859 the Dents, Grants and an enslaved African-American workforce lived on the property.
