Chief of Digestive Diseases
The Michael E DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking to recruit an outstanding physician-scientist to become its next Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The successful applicant is expected to be a seasoned clinician with current federal research funding with specific focus on health services, population health and quality improvement research; have national recognition; and a track record of mentoring.
The Gastroenterology Section includes a total of 17 faculty, 40 staff and a strong administrative team. The Section provides clinical services including general gastroenterology, hepatology to more specialized services including therapeutic endoscopy and liver transplantation. The research and scholarly impacts of the section include innovative laboratory discoveries and technology, epidemiology and population health, clinical innovations, quality improvement and patient safety. Within this rich environment, this position provides the opportunity to lead a section that makes substantial contributions across clinical, education, and research activities in the VHA.
In addition to clinical, teaching and research responsibilities, the Section Chief responsibilities include:
Participation and representation in relevant committees to include: Operative and Invasive Committee (Procedures and Moderate Sedation quality review), Special Procedures/Same Day Surgery Committee, Equipment and Logistics and Peer Review; Monitoring and review of patient care for quality and validity for the GI Department; Assessment of staff medical and professional performance; Supervision of staff including MDs, DOs, Advanced Practice Nurses, administrative staff; Consult management including receiving consults, triage and scheduling, and review; Delegation of authority for the responsibilities of the GI Department to include: Research, Administrative, Education; Facilitate affiliation and relationships with partner organizations including Department of Defense and the Baylor College of Medicine; Ensure service continuity including scheduling, leave management, and call; Maintenance of GI department policies and procedures for both operations as well as up-to-date medical guidelines and standards; Familiarity with quality and productivity assessments in both the inpatient and outpatient settings or experience with operational metrics including access, throughout, efficiency; and ability to participate in multidisciplinary endeavors with other services (such as Nursing, Finance, Logistics)
