The RN practices within the Surgical Services and under the umbrella of Patient Care Services providing care to Veterans. The Operating Room RN provides, directs and supervises the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse Veteran population of varying complexity in the inpatient/ outpatient perioperative setting. The operating rooms specialize in caring for adult and geriatric Veterans during the perioperative experience in a variety of surgical specialties. The nurse has the technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as a circulating and scrub nurse in all the services. The nurse must demonstrate competency in a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures. The nurse is accountable for promoting patient safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the patient. The nurse collaborates with physicians and ancillary services to provide this care. The nurse analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities and monitors activities occurring within the department when acting in the charge nurse capacity.

Physical Requirements:
Duties are performed in the operating rooms which require special Operating Room (OR) attire with regular and recurring exposure to radiation, blood, body fluids, laser energy, and potentially toxic chemicals as listed in the facility chemical inventory system. The RN must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) supplied to protect from inherent environmental hazards. PPE includes but is not limited to: protective eyewear, surgical hood, lead apron, laser glasses, knee high booties, impervious gown, gloves. Physical components of the position require lifting of light to heavy objects. Pushing up to 30-pound force is required to move patient carts around the work unit. To perform CPR, a minimum of 125 pound of force is recommended by the American Heart Association. Use of both hands and fingers is required along with the ability to reach above the shoulders. Neck range of motion must be sufficient to allow the RN to fully scan the entire sterile field to assess for breaks in sterility. Visual acuity, with or without corrective devices must be sufficient to allow for visualization of sure needle to 4.8 mm. The RN must have ability to distinguish low range sound and/or voice in surgical suite environment with competing background conversations, alarms and equipment noise. Occasional kneeling is required for some operating room procedures. The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position also requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.
