The incumbent practices as a registered nurse in the Outpatient Chemotherapy Department under the Nursing Section of Patient Care Services within the Detroit VAMC. The oncology nurse provides direct patient care to adult and geriatric patients who are being treated for a variety of cancers and or blood disorders.
*The oncology nurse is responsible for the administration of standard and investigational chemotherapeutic agents via infusion or injection, maintains access ports, performs phlebotomy treatments, and assists patients with maintaining a pump if indicated, may perform blood draws and will assess and or triage overall well being and needs of the patient.
*The oncology nurse collaborates with providers, community resources and ancillary services to provide the most efficient and compassionate care for the patients.
*The oncology nurse will collect and compile data necessary for management of patients with malignant diseases.
*The oncology nurse will provide patient and staff teaching as appropriate for this specialized nursing care.
*The oncology nurse analyzes and upgrades patient care through participation and or initiates quality improvement activities.
*The oncology nurse will maintain clinical competencies through continuous study, inservices and participation in obtaining continuing education units.
*Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor.
