A Nursing Assistant (NA) assigned to Spinal Cord Injury Care Line, Inpatient Units at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC) willbe responsible to provide nursing care to veterans. The incumbent is responsible for performing more complex personal patient care duties, supporting diagnostic procedures, technical nursing treatments, patient charting, and patient instructions which involve direct work relationships with patients and participation as a member of the nursing care team in direct services to patients. Uses initiative to carry out recurring assignments and in prioritizing assigned duties based on patient condition and previous instructions, obtains additional instructions for any unusual or unfamiliar situations where appropriate guidelines are not readily available. Duties of a CNA may include but are not limited to the following:
· Perform a range of diagnostic support duties, preparing patients for tests, exams and treatments.
· Observe and reports signs of skin breakdown to RN/LVN.
· Maintains client/patient privacy.
· Suctioning naso/oral cavity.
· Colostomy wound skin care and application of appliance.
· Collect patient data.
· Assist/completes clerical and transport functions as assigned.
· Adhere to VA and Nursing Service policies, procedures and standards.
· Deliver care to patients in a respectful and non-judgmental manner.
· Accurately reports patient information.
· Comply with Medical Center standards.
· Utilize equipment in a safe manner.
· Report unsafe equipment and working conditions to appropriate individual.
· Employ proper lifting/moving, transfer, and assistance devices and demonstrates safe and proper body mechanics.
· Complete mandatory safety, equipment and other annual reviews.
· Demonstrate and maintains competency as defined by unit and department criteria.
Work Schedule: There are two 12 hour tours available, as defined below. All tours are subject to rotations.
Day: 7:30am - 8:00pm

Basic Requirements:
· CITIZENSHIP: Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
· ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position; in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
· EDUCATION OR TRAINING: One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant (NA) occupation.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
· GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level)1. Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level, which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. OR
2. Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND
3. Demonstrated KSAs
a. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
b. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
c. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
A year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in the appropriate activities.
