Join the team! The CPSC is seeking recent graduates under the Pathways Program. This position is provided for recent graduates with a desire to work in the consumer product safety field and/or public sector and assignments are designed to complement the graduates educational field while meeting the expressed needs of the agency and individual CPSC organizations. This position is located in the Division of Human Factors in the Directorate for Engineering Sciences (ES). The goal of the Division is to apply principles of human factors psychology and engineering to determine how human behavior and products interact in order to affect errors, incidents, and consequently injuries and deaths. To achieve this goal, the Human Factors staff applies research and best practices in the fields of psychology, child development and learning theory, engineering, anthropometry, biomechanics, and/or industrial design. The staff is up-to-date with current literature and research in the fields of consumer safety, child development, human behavior, and engineering. One main task in the Division is to aid in the assessment of the effectiveness of existing and proposed product safety standards. In addition, the Human Factors staff members evaluate products for product recalls, assess children’s products to determine the appropriate age grading, maintain an age grading handbook for public use, and evaluate manufacturers’ warning labels and instructions for product use.

The incumbent is an industrial engineer in training who is responsible to administer and interpret human factors and/or child behavior analyses based on technical aspects of the products, user characteristics and behavior, and the environment, stressing the interaction between these factors. The incumbent will perform analyses on the age appropriateness and intended age range of toys and other children's products using standardized guidance in CPSC's age determination guidelines, including all of the administrative and logistical tasks related. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned to support Operating Plan goals and daily activities in the Directorate of Engineering Sciences.
This is an appointment under the CPSC Recent Graduate program. The program duration is two years. Upon successful completion of the program and at the agency's discretion, the appointee may be converted to a permanent position in the competitive service. Appointee must sign a Participant Agreement. Recent Graduates will enter a formal training program with a mentor and execute an Individual Development Plan outlining training requirements and program expectations. The entire duration of the Recent Graduate Appointment constitutes a trial period.
