You will present Lincoln Home interpretive programming to diverse audiences about 19th century American history, including the life of Abraham Lincoln, political history, slavery, and the origins of the Civil War. The majority of programs will be guided tours of the Lincoln Home. The employee will also periodically staff the visitor center information desk to help provide site, area, and historical information and orientation to the public. The employee will work with a high volume of visitors in potentially stressful situations, and in a variety of weather conditions. At the GS-3 level, you will typically be provided with more supervision and assist other employees in providing interpretive programs to park visitors rather than taking a lead role.
AREA INFORMATION: Lincoln Home National Historic Site is located in downtown Springfield, Illinois. Springfield, the state capital (population 117,000), is located approximately 200 miles south of Chicago and 100 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. Amenities are typical of a Midwestern city and include a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities as well as professional, commercial and health services. The climate is cold in the winter and hot and humid in summer. Government housing is not available but a variety of housing options are available for rent or purchase in the local area. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
This appointment may be extended for additional time as long as you continue to meet the requirements of the Pathways program. This is not guaranteed and depends upon a number of factors including funding, workload, your performance and conduct, etc. Upon completion of your educational program, your internship and employment with us is anticipated to be terminated. However, if a position should become available, if you meet all the requirements, you may be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position at this or other national parks. However, there is no guarantee that a position will be available or an offer made to you.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
