About the Position:
The position is located at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, VA, in the Directorate for Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic Clinic. The work encompasses a complete spectrum of auxiliary practice of general emergency and family medicine in pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in specialty areas such as orthopaedic care. The work involves prolonged periods of standing and bending to diagnose and treat patient illnesses and/or injuries, as well as fine motor skills. Surgery requires a high degree of manual dexterity and muscle strength to hold a position for an extended length of time and to operate specialized equipment in the operating room. Lifting and positioning patients on the operating room table is also required. Incumbent may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Appropriate precautions must be taken to prevent the spread of disease.

As a Physician Assistant you will provide a wide range of primary health care, in medical or surgical specialty areas, to individuals of all ages and their families, including direct patient care, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, injuries, and disease prevention and treatment. Provide primary health care on a routine and emergency basis to eligible beneficiaries enrolled in services, performing duties, in consultation with or at the direction of the supervising physician. Performs as first assist in a variety of surgical procedures for patients, within the orthopaedic department. Performs comprehensive and problem focused histories and physical examinations, and dictates narrative summaries. Interprets findings reported from radiograph, MRI, CT scan, bone scan and other diagnostic imaging technology. Write, orders, and dispenses medications and prescribes controlled substances in accordance with approved treatment protocols. Write and dictate computer entry progress notes on the patient's chart, indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed. Plan with other professionals and agencies involved in providing primary and emergency care services to patients and their family members, and coordinate the emergency care provided. Provide consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and their families in regards to treatment and medical care.
