As an Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) in one of the Alexandria VA Health Care System, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), your primary duties will be to provide prompt and courteous customer service when receiving Veterans, family members, and the public. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
· Providing service to Veterans in person or telephonically to address Veteran's questions, concerns, and issues related to health care and customer services, i.e., Veteran's ID Cards, Beneficiary Travel, Eligibility and Enrollment, etc.
· Scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines.
· Reviewing and scheduling consults for the specialty clinics in accordance with VA policy.
· Working collaboratively with other CBOC staff and services in the Healthcare System including pharmacy, nursing, Alexandria Call Center, and Lafayette/Alexandria administrative staff.
· Setting priorities and deadlines, assisting with enrollment of Veterans into the VA system, taking photo IDs for Veterans.
· Documenting patient contact in the Computerized Patient Records System utilizing administrative progress notes.
Tour of Duty: Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm OR 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
Position Title: Advanced Medical Support Assistant
Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary and is performed in a clinic responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems. Normal safety precautions and practices are required for working a health care environment. This position requires emotional ability to deal effectively with multi-tasking and high volume of patient flow. Other physical demands include reaching, bending, stretching, walking, and carrying light loads of supplies.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English language proficiency (written and spoken).
- Education: One year above high school.
- Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Preferred Experience: One year of experience interpreting
and verifying provider orders using medical terminology in a clinical
setting.

through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other
organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual;
community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and
experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive
credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
