The Alexandria VA Health Care System, Alexandria, Louisiana is a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisianas 64 parishes. The Alexandria VAHCS is located in Pineville, Louisiana with community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lake Charles, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

The Social Worker (SUD) has knowledge of substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders including assessment, prevention, treatment planning, and evidence based treatments. Must possess knowledge of specialized issues such as impact on relationships, the detoxification process for carious substances, relapse prevention, and aftercare. Ability to independently provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, groups, and families on topics related to substance abuse issues and co-occurring MH and SUD. Maintains appropriate records, charting information necessary to ensure an accurate portrayal of the patient's activities, condition and progress. Assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of the patient, complete psychosocial assessments and provide treatment. Must be competent in all aspects of Social Work and use sound diagnostic skills in identifying quickly and accurately the crucial problems facing the substance abusing patient.
Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
The basic requirements for employment as a VHA social worker are prescribed by statute in 38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(9), as amended by section 205 of Public Law 106-419, enacted November 1, 2000. To qualify for appointment as a social worker in VHA, all applicants must:

Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

SALARY: Salary will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB) and is based on experience and education.
Education. Have a masters degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work.
This position is in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status.
