The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) Special Procedures (SP) of the Radiology Services currently has one (1) vacancy in VA San Diego Healthcare System located at the main hospital in La Jolla, CA. The DRT will perform fully functional duties at the journeyman level, with the added specializations of Angiography/Interventional Radiography, Computed Tomography (CT) and Ultrasound. The DRT's (SP) duties include (but not limited):
· Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures for both Angio and CT.
· Reviews pre-procedure laboratory tests results and determines if results fall within the established safety limits for receiving iodinated contrast (BUN, creatinine) and that blood coagulation levels (PT, INR) are within safe levels.
· Responsible for positioning patients for desired results and shielding patients as appropriate. Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment in Angio and CT for optimum quality and outcome.
· In addition to operating the Angiographic and CT equipment, is familiar with Ultrasound equipment in Angio, as well as peripheral equipment such as radiofrequency ablation, cryogenic ablation, and power injectors used in both Angio and CT.
· Uses a wide variety of computerized equipment such as the Angiographic and CT equipment, Digital Fluoroscopy, Computer Acquisition and port-processing workstations, PACS viewing stations, WEBPACS desk top viewing software, and hospital computer systems such as VISTA and CPRS.
· Performs computed tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials including biopsy, interventional procedures and peripheral vascular examinations.
· Performs CT guided biopsy studies of muscular skeletal system, neuro systems, lung, liver, kidney and other soft tissue sampling, abscess drainages, microwave or cyroablation studies requiring localization of wand placement.
· Performs neuroangiography, including spine, head and neck studies utilizing highly sophisticated x-ray equipment such as rotational imaging, computerized fluoroscopy, pressure injectors, biplane imaging, patient monitors, etc.
· Performs peripheral and visceral angiography of the abdominal systems and extremities i.e. renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc.
· Performs myelography of the complete spine utilizing conventional x-ray units, patient immobilizers, etc., when required. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies of the spinal canal.
· Performs hysterosalpingograms, athrograms and joint injections as needed to support the service.
· Performs pre-procedural, procedural and post-procedural care of patients, including basic first aid and life support practices in radiography.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours a week. Monday to Friday, 7:30 4:00pm. Shifts will include: weekends, call and holidays rotations. Work hours may be adjusted dependent upon patient care needs.

REQUIREMENTS:
a. U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not
possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
b. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic
technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R) (must
provide copy of certification with application package).
c. Experience or Education. Completion of a full-time training course of
at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school
diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an
associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in
Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of
Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology (must provide copy of
transcript/certificate with application package).
d. Proficient in spoken and written English. (To be appointed under authority
of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, serving in a direct patient-care capacity in
VHA, applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.)
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: The following additional qualifications are strongly
desired, but not required for this position:
· At least two years of CT work experience and at least five years of total Radiology experience;
· Experience with interventional and angiography procedures;
· California Radiologic Technologist certification in Fluoroscopy;
· Experience with mobile CT units;
· Minimum of one year AGFA PACS experience or similar PACS system experience

EXPERIENCE DEFINITIONS
(a) Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable,
experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills,
abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as "core
competencies") associated with current radiologic technology practice.
(b)
Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after
completion of the basic requirements identified above. Experience as a graduate
DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently
passed the certification examination.
(c) Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according
to its relationship to full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive 1
week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work. A full year of
work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience
will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS. In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met to qualify for the GS-10 grade level:
GS-10: Experience. Completion of one (1) year of experience equivalent
to the next lower grade level (GS-9) directly related to the position being
filled. In addition, you must also demonstrate the following KSAs for the GS-10
level and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs: (1)
Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques
including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes; (2) Skill to
recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures,
and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures; (3) Knowledge
of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields,
and properties of x-ray, in order to understand the operation of the equipment;
and (4) Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of
difficult radiographic (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, etc.)
studies.
ADVANCED CERTIFICATION REQUIRED. Advanced ARRT certification in Computed Tomography (CT) is required to qualify for this position. (MUST provide proof of your certification).
