The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant (MSA) serves as the operational officer for the full range of outpatient and/or inpatient programs in the Palo Alto Health Care System in one of the Divisions, Palo Alto, Livermore, Menlo Park or one of the Community Based Outpatient Clinics - San Jose, Capitola, Monterey, Fremont or Stockton. The position is organizationally aligned under Nursing Service and works closed with other members of the health care team. The VAPAHCS uses a practice group concept that combines managed care and primary card treatment models. Each care team consists of identifiable and consistent team members that include (Physicians, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Dietician, Social Workers, Registered Nurse, etc.), patients, and external customers. The incumbent has supervisory responsibility for technical and administrative direction of a staff mix including GS-7 Lead MSAs, GS-6 MSAs and/or GS-5 MSAs. The Supervisor maybe responsible for one of the following subsections: Acute Mental Health, Rehab/Acute Medical Inpatient, Livermore, and Menlo Park inpatient programs, Operating Room, Emergency Department, various outpatient clinics or call centers in the above mentioned locations. Through effective communication with the frontline staff, the Supervisory MSA is responsible for guiding, assisting, and counseling staff in the performance of day-to-day duties to ensure program operations are carried out smoothly and efficiently.
The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Physical Requirements: This position requires light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds; reaching above shoulders; use of fingers, and both hands and legs; walking and standing up to 4 hours daily; repeated bending up to 3 hours; hearing with aid permitted; working closely with others and/or alone; protracted or irregular hours; and unusual emotional strain.
