The purpose of this student trainee position is to assist Fiscal's Program Support Assistant in providing administrative support to the Chief and Assistant Chief Financial Manager's and also serves as the Program Support Assistant trainee for the entire Fiscal Department by performing a wide variety of tasks associated with maintaining and supporting the work performed within the organization. The incumbent provides a range of duties from correspondence and information control to tracking equipment, supplies, and services as well as being the alternate or back up timekeeper for the service. The cost of premiums is split between the employee and the agency, as it is for all permanent employees.
Students hired under the Internship Program are generally ineligible for retirement coverage. Temporary employees are not eligible for coverage under the Federal Employees Group Life Insurance Program.
Students hired under the Pathways Programs on appointments for 90 days or more are eligible to earn annual and sick leave. As provided in 5 U.S.C. 6303(b), employees whose appointments are limited to less than 90 days may be eligible for annual leave if they have previously served for a continuous period of 90 days under successive appointments.

Applicants for VA Pathways Internship positions are rated, referred, and selected using a process called Group Rating. Quality groups are defined to reflect the requirements to perform the job successfully and to distinguish differences in the quality of each applicant's job-related competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs).
