The following shows the amounts of education and/or experience required to qualify for positions covered by this standard.
GS-3: Six (6) months of general experience OR successful completion of one (1) year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields.
GS-4: 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience (described below) OR successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.
GS-5: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 (described below) OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-4 level, you must have 6 months of experience (equivalent to the GS-3 level) that included duties such as:
Conducts a complete assessment Assists in assessing the scene and recognizes the need for ancillary personnel, triages the patient(s), performs primary and secondary patient assessment. Performs basic technical health care extender functions within the emergency medical arena in response to various accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness. Uses radio equipment following FCC procedures and effectively communicates orally and in writing with medical and ancillary personnel in emergency communication techniques and operating communication equipment. Perform vehicle and ambulance facilities maintenance up to and including cleaning and disinfection of each ambulance and equipment daily, performs patient transport, and patient care duties. Dispatches, assigns and schedules field unit vehicles, equipment and personnel. Compiles and maintains information for EMS logs and reports. Keeps track of trip tickets, Ambulance Charge Tickets and gives these forms to the appropriate person for processing.
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-5 level, you must have one year of experience (equivalent to the GS-4 level) that included duties such as:
Upon arriving at assigned emergency situation, employee makes an initial independent assessment of the situation and selects from a large number of procedures (protocols) the one most appropriate for the given situation and proceeds to administer medical treatment. Performs a range of diagnostic support duties, within their scope of practice. Perform patient examination, to provide patient care and to ensure appropriate patient handling. Uses radio equipment following FCC procedures and effectively communicates orally and in writing with medical and ancillary personnel using extensive skill in emergency communication techniques and operating communication equipment. Perform vehicle maintenance and ambulance facilities to and including cleaning and disinfection of each ambulance and equipment daily, performs patient transport, and patient care duties. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.
General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

This position may have promotion potential to the GS-05 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
