This position is located with the Interior Board of Land Appeals (IBLA or the Board) within the Office of Hearings and Appeals. IBLA is an appellate review body that exercises the delegated authority of the Secretary of the Interior to decide public land disputes arising from the implementation of various statutes by the Department of the Interior. Its administrative judges decide appeals from bureau decisions relating to the use and disposition of public lands and their resources, including a wide variety of matters including mining claims, oil and gas disputes, royalty under-reporting, surface coal mining permits, geothermal leasing rights, rights-of-way and other use permit appeals, and Equal Access to Justice claims. Located within the Department's Office of Hearings and Appeals, IBLA is separate and independent from the Bureaus and Offices whose decisions it reviews.
If selected for the position, you will review cases and prepare draft decisions and orders, both procedural and substantive, in cases that are on appeal before the Board. As an Attorney-Adviser (General), you will participate in all phases of legal work incident to the Board’s review and disposition of the Board’s docket of appeals.
The Office of Hearings and Appeals has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework with supervisor approval.

As an Attorney Advisor at the full performance level, you will review case files and write draft decisions and orders presented in the Board’s docketed appeals. Your duties will include, but will not be limited to:
