About the Position:
This announcement is being used to fill a Health Technician (Orthopedic/Podiatry) position in the Department of Surgery at Evans Army Community Hospital (EACH) on Fort Carson. This is a developmental position being filled at the GS-05 level only, with promotion potential to the GS-06 level. This position works under the supervision of the Chief, Orthopedic and Podiatry Service. Fort Carson is located near Colorado Springs, CO and provides health care services to a large population of active duty military and their families. EACH and Fort Carson are only minutes or hours away from tourist attractions, such as Garden of the Gods, Cave of the Winds, and Pike's Peak, and from popular tourist activities, including hiking, skiing, and white-water rafting.

Apply the full range of casts in routine (arm, hip, leg, shoulder and body casts) procedures. Assist in the application of specialized weight bearing casts for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures. Apply a variety of highly specialized casts and plaster clasts. Apply a variety of equipment such as Balkan Frames, Suspension Bucks Traction, Bryant Traction, Russell Traction, and various others designed to fit the specialized needs of the patients. Assist medical clerks in patient check-in and appointments as needed. Sterilize treatment room using aseptic (sterile) standards. Assist surgeons during operating room procedures by holding or rotating affected extremity. Assist surgeons with procedures including Steinman pins and Kirchner wires. Instruct patients on surgical procedures and in the use/care of orthoses and prosthoses. Document instructions provided to patients.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.
Specialized experience is defined as: demonstrated experience in applying treatment equipment and devices (e.g., splints, casts, crutches, and other medical devices); testing medical devices before patient use or replacing malfunctioning equipment; and in assisting with the positioning of patients during operating room or radiology procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Combination of Experience and Education: less than 1 year of specialized experience; and less than 4 years (120 semester hours) undergraduate education. Compute the percentage of the requirements that you meet and the total is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education by 120. Add the 2 percentages. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification).
