Adjudicates medical applications and supporting legal and privacy documents for Airman Medical Certification. Determines whether restrictions/limitations apply or if a Special Issuance certificate is required based on a very large number of medical conditions, medication, biomedical tests, or demonstrated ability tests, etc.
Makes final determination whether to issue a medical certificate or rating for which the airman is applying, by consideration of all available legal and regulatory guidelines contained in Federal Aviation Regulations, various FAA medical and legal handbooks and other governing documents of airman medical certification.
Examines incoming applications to prepare, evaluate, process and compose correspondence sent to airmen and Aviation Medical Examiners (AME's) for compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulations.
Examines and determines if additional information is required for complex cases or if conflicts and inconsistencies exist; then establishes the accuracy of validity of statements submitted by the applicant.
Interprets, analyzes and evaluates the FAA application and examination to independently determine if the AME issued the medical certificate appropriately. When a certificate is inappropriately issued, incumbent documents the findings and assigns appropriate error codes which will reflect on the AME's Performance summary report. The incumbent notates error(s) and prepares file for the appropriate Regional Flight Surgeon for further action. The incumbent's evaluation of the AME's reporting performance can result in de-designation of the AME.
Processes all telephone inquiries and provides guidance to members of Congressional Staff, FAA Regional Offices, Headquarters Office of Aviation Medicine, General Aviation and Flight Standards, AME's and airmen. Determines what information from the airmen records is releasable and to whom. These determinations are made with the thorough knowledge of and in compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, Privacy Act of 1974, and other regulatory guides, policies and procedures.
