The incumbent serves as a staff social worker in the Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Mental Health Service. The incumbent is responsible for the provision of professional social work services to an adult patient population. Prepares written assessments based on knowledge of each patient's background and medical history for use of the interdisciplinary team in developing the appropriate treatment process. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team as a clinical specialist and works with other professionals in formulating individualized treatment programs and follow-up plans for each assigned patient. Participates in developing, organizing and implementing a wide variety of treatment programs for the veteran, for their spouses, family member and significant others, particularly veterans at high risk for suicide. Conducts group, family and individual therapeutic counseling sessions, utilizing the full range of treatment modalities. Conducts therapeutic short term, in-depth counseling in accordance with specific guidelines. Provides consultation to and, where appropriate, leadership of therapeutic community groups (e.g. decision making, planning and special activity groups). Participates in educational programs for staff of the Mental Health Clinic. Collaborates with other disciplines in compiling data for Continuous Quality improvement reports, JCAHO standards and to ensure current information is readily available. Incumbent must possess an Arkansas drivers' license and are subject to additional medical requirements for positions that involve Federal motor vehicle operation. Will perform general mental health and administrative duties as assigned by the service chief.

The basic requirements for employment as a VHA social worker are prescribed by statute in 38 U.S.C. 7402(b)(9), as amended by section 205 of Public Law 106-419, enacted November 1, 2000. To qualify for appointment as a social worker in VHA, all applicants must:
Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States.
Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Senior Social Workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. At least two years should be in an area of specialized social work practice. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an ASWB advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice). Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty.
