The VA Hudson Valley Health Care System is currently recruiting for 1 New Graduate Nurse for the RN- (Transition to Practice Program) which is designed for the new graduate nurse who has completed an entry level nursing degree program. Classes for completion of this program are held at the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System, at both the Montrose, NY and Castle Point, NY campuses.

The RN Transition to Practice training program was developed to support new nursing graduates during the first year of practice in an acute care, extended care and mental health settings. The graduate nurse will participate in an orientation program and be assigned to a qualified preceptor who will work closely with him/her during the unit based clinical orientation. The transition to practice program is a 12-month program; however, the length of clinical orientation will vary according to the needs and progress of the nurse. Clinical experiences and didactic sessions are scheduled during the year to facilitate transition and achieve competency in key knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of a registered nurse. Transition to Practice Nurses are required to attend all scheduled learning experiences and complete required projects, evaluations, and written assignments.
Transition to Practice Nurses are expected to:
· Have an active, non-restricted RN license
· Attend classes and rotation opportunities in specialty/clinical areas as assigned.
· Complete assignments, evidenced based project, and evaluations within the required time frame
· The majority of the orientation will take place on the day tour from 7:30am-4pm, however rotation to evenings/nights may be required to meet unit clinical needs. Be available to work as scheduled on assigned units. The work week will vary, but includes weekdays, weekends and holidays. Shifts are 8 hours from 11:30pm-8am; 7:30am-4pm; 3:30pm-12am. (Please note- after the successful completion of the 12-month Transition to Practice Program, the Transition to Practice nurse will be placed in a vacant position which could be on days, evenings or nights. Preference for scheduling is based on the unit's need).
· Attend graduation recognition ceremony. Upon completion of the 12-month program, participants who successfully complete the program requirements will be honored and presented with a certificate of completion.
Work Schedule: Must be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
This position will be required to work at both the Montrose, NY and Castle Point, NY campuses.
Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education's (CCNE) Standards for Accreditation
of Entry to Practice Nurse Residency Programs (CCNE, 2015) and the Veterans Health
Administration Directive 2011-039.
Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), pulling, pushing, repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking, depth perception , hearing (aide permitted); near/far vision correctable to meet Driver's License requirements. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
Work requires extensive walking, standing, stretching and bending in caring for patients in wards.
