Position is located at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center (VAMC) as part of the Physical Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) of Extended Care Service. The Medical Support Assistant has advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and revenue process. At this level the MSA is responsible for a broad range of scheduling, administrative and clerical duties associated primarily with Physical Therapy (PT) and may assist with Occupational Therapy (OT), Kinesiotherapy (KT), and Speech Therapy clinics. The incumbent serves as the scheduler for the clinic and is responsible for triaging all telephone calls, responding appropriately, greeting visitors, and responding to their needs. The incumbent assures all messages are communicated in a timely manner and handles all Veteran information in accordance with provision of the Privacy Act.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 9:00am-5:30pm. Hours may be rotated or extended to meet the needs of the clinic or our Veterans.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending and carrying light items such as papers and books. No special physical demands are required.
Basic Requirements:

volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;
religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and
experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying
experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Advanced Medical Support Assistant
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5). Experience at the GS-5 includes but is not limited to: scheduling, cancelling, rescheduling patients appointment and/or monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility, ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit, verifying and updating demographics and insurance information, processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals, performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre-authorization requirements for specific coverage, etc.
