As a Medical Technician, you will perform moderately difficult and complex laboratory examinations and procedures. Perform phlebotomy on patients to collect blood samples. Utilize automated instrumentation to conduct tests in chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, serology, virology and/or hematology. Set up equipment, instruments, and apparatus. Calibrate various analyzers, perform operator maintenance, facilitate repairs, troubleshoot minor problems and make adjustments when necessary. Perform a broad variety of automated and manual procedures related to the quality and quantity of constituents of human blood, plasma, and other body fluids. Perform a variety of chemical tests to examine the presence or absence of various constituents or substances in patient specimens. Maintain accurate records utilizing Quality Control charts/worksheets and ensures all Quality Control results fall within established control limits prior to releasing patient results.

Experience Required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Performing laboratory testing in three or more of the following areas: chemistry, hematology, microbiology , serology/virology and/or urinalysis; and maintaining and/or calibrating laboratory equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Selective Placement Factor: This position requires you to have a minimum of an associate degree in a biological or chemical science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution AND requires you to be certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT), or other organization deemed comparable by the Office of Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD HA) or their designee, Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technician/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS); OR you must have successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).
