This position serves as an assistant to the Fire Dozer Operator of a Forest Service Fire Dozer Module located on a forest unit and is responsible for assisting the fire dozer operator with the operations of the dozer, transport and dozer tender. When not engaged in these duties, the incumbent assists in the development and implementation of the fuels management program.
Pay rates vary depending on location. See the OPM website at http://www.opm.gov/ for additional information on pay rates.
These are permanent positions with varying tours of duty and may include weekend work. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 13 pay periods full-time employment). Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location.
The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Makes initial evaluation of fire situation and determines suppression method to use, suppression access, vehicle placement, deployment of dozer, point of initial attack. Has responsibility for numerous technical decisions regarding fire dozer readiness, deployment, and operation with technical advice and assistance.
May provide on-the-job training to others in methods and techniques of firefighting including use of hand tools, use of dozers, and safety.
Completes reports for time and attendance, fire time, crew time, and accident/injury reports, fire replacement equipment requisitions. Prepares job hazard analysis for the fire dozer operator for review and concurrence. Prepares and leads tailgate safety meetings. Under fire dozer operator’s direction, secures emergency medical treatment for crew; arrange for crew meals, sleeping and lodging, schedules maintenance and repair for assigned vehicles and equipment; and ensures the health, safety and conduct of crewmembers.
Gathers data and may lead others in the gathering of data from natural and/or activity generated fuels and assists in the preparation of plans and direction for fuels management, fuels treatment, and other plans such as burn plans for other resources.
Responsible for assisting the operator of fire dozer module in responding to wildland fires. Assists in directing the dozer to fire location and positioning in appropriate location in consideration of safety of personnel and equipment.
Performs wildfire suppression support as directed within training and physical and other duties as assigned. Duties listed are at the full performance level.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age.
May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary or trial period.
Initial appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of training.
DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license as a condition of employment.
Must be able to obtain a commercial drivers license (CDL) within 90 days of appointment date as a condition of employment.
This position requires the selectee to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicant tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice.
WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position. This announcement constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements.
