This is a Medical Technician, GS-0645-05 position located in Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Services in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services. The primary purpose of this position is to perform blood collection procedures by venipuncture techniques and as the primary autopsy assistant. Consults with Bench Technologist or Supervisory Medical Technologist for technical guidance as required, but routinely is expected to complete all work assignments within established guideline.
Major Duties
Serves as a medical technician and primary autopsy assistant within Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service which supports a large number of veterans population in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center by obtaining venous blood specimens, using knowledge of aseptic technique and phlebotomy material selection (e.g. syringes, butterflies,
Technical Supervision and work assignments are made by the Supervisory Medical Technologist. The limited testing areas are: Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Blood Drawing Area, Specimen Processing, Receiving, Shipping and Reference Lab Services. Assist the medical technologist in a variety of diagnostic tests using procedures ranging from waived testing to moderately complex.
Process, receive and prepares specimens to be sent to outside reference laboratories. Receive samples and specimens of tissue, blood, urine, stool, sputum and other body fluids. Checks all specimens are properly and completely labeled. Assures requests (CPRS or hardcopy and computer orders) and correct specimens are submitted with all required information.
Phlebotomy duties include collecting, accessioning and distributing specimens to the appropriate section of the laboratory for analysis. Phlebotomy will be incumbent's primary responsibility when not engaged in assisting in clinical laboratory. Other responsibilities include processing of "send-out" specimen for reference labs and limited clinical laboratory procedures.
Perform phlebotomy services on all patients as required. Incumbent uses procedures and policies established by Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service to correctly identify the patient before any blood is drawn and to correctly label all specimens drawn in the presence of patient upon completion of venipuncture.
Evaluate submitted specimens to determine their suitability for analysis as ordered/requested by health care providers, requests new specimens if submitted specimens are determined to be unsuitable. Incumbent maintains accurate and orderly collection log records and worksheets where required according to established protocol.
Technical Procedures: Makes the primary incision to open body cavities; removes breastbone; together with the pathologists removes thoracic and abdominal contents in blocks; removes, cleans and opens intestines. Removes the skull -cap, the brain, and the pituitary gland; takes bone marrow from vertebra and ribs and other bones as directed; excises gonads under the guidance of the pathologist.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm (rotating weekends and holidays)

Physical Requirements: The work will typically require a considerable amount of walking to and from the buildings of the medical center, including buildings on the outer perimeter of the medical center grounds, sometimes during inclement weather. The work also requires regular and recurrent standing to perform test, walking, reaching, bending and kneeling to obtain supplies and operation instruments. The work involves regular and recurrent exposure to moderate risks or discomforts, which require special safety precautions. Occasionally lifts weights up to 75 pounds.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04 level.

Specialized Experience: You must possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the federal service. Qualifying specialized experience typically includes, but not limited to: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.

Education: You may substitute education for specialized experience required at the GS-5 level as follows: successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to this position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: You may also combine education and specialized experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. An equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience as described above may be used to meet the total experience requirements. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. For example, one full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
