The incumbent works in Imaging Service at the Denver VA Medical Center, Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). The Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound Technician) independently preforms standard general imaging and complex ultrasound examinations including non-standard and advanced protocols, and manages the diagnostic ultrasound laboratory, preforming highly technical evaluation of the abdomen, pelvis, thorax, thyroids, prostate, kidneys, aorta, scrotum, and conducts vascular studies and interventional procedure. The incumbent must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment.
Major duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Work Schedule: Irregular work hours (including afterhours, weekends, and on-call/holiday rotations)

Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, reaching, crouching, stooping, and stretching. Must be able to lift items up to 50lbs.

Grade Determinations:
GS-9: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-08)which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions being filled. This would be independently preforming standard general imaging and complex ultrasound examinations including non-standard and advanced protocols such as emergency and inpatient, in a highly complex medical facility. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
