This position serves as a Fire Dispatcher located on a forest unit and is responsible for supporting fire suppression activities. This may be a single agency dispatch office or interagency dispatch center located in a fire management organization. The area involved may encompass federal, state, tribal and private lands within the dispatch center's area of influence.
Pay rates vary depending on location. See the OPM website at http://www.opm.gov/ for additional information on pay rates.
These are permanent positions with varying tours of duty and may include weekend work. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 13 pay periods full-time employment). Positions may be filled as career ladders or could be filled at the full performance level dependent upon the individual units needs. Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location.
Note: Not all positions will have a full performance GS-07 grade level, full performance is determined by each unit’s organization requirements.

Operates and/or directs the operation of various dispatch telecommunication systems.
Anticipates fire suppression needs and determines resource allocation. Coordinates aviation dispatch operations (e.g., aircraft capabilities and limitations, flight planning, aviation safety).
Reviews internal operating procedures and systems, makes recommendations for improvement, and updates/develops operating plans and mobilization guides. Organizes and reviews completed records of all orders placed and actions taken to ensure adherence to established operating procedures.
Performs, and directs others, in inputting data into a number of fire-related computer applications (e.g., incident qualification records, fire reporting systems, and automated dispatch systems) and makes assessment of outputs.
Plans and provides critical logistical support information to the supervisor for successful implementation of fire management program activities. Develops and implements fire program management project work plans.
Provides information and consults with cooperators and other interested entities. Coordinates and may assist with fire training and orientation. Provides assistance on problems encountered by lower level dispatch personnel.
Performs wildlife suppression support as directed within training and physical and other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be 18 years of age.
May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary or trial period.
Initial appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of training.
DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
Must pass a Live Scan which includes Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)/Department of Justice (DOJ) background check prior to being certified to perform law enforcement dispatching duties and operating the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS). This is a condition of employment.
Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver’s license; a commercial driver’s license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.
