As a Dental Hygienist working in Dental Service, you will perform advanced clinical techniques and serve as an instructor for a dental hygiene program. You may also lead/supervise lower graded Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistants. Duties include, but are not limited to the following tasks:
Sets up operatory for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit
Provides routine oral prophylactic care to include application of fluoride solutions
Provides gross debridement, deep scaling, and curettage and root planning procedures
Cleans dental prostheses, fixed and removable
Manages dental recall system, referring patients to the doctor for additional care when needed
Applies desensitizing and sealant materials
Makes impressions for fluoride carrier trays Administers topical anesthetic agents and local anesthetic (per State license)
Administers local anti-infective agents per direction of dentist
Accomplishes all procedures within standard infection control protocols
Provides patient education appropriate to the veteran's needs and oral condition
Instruments are properly prepared for sterilization by SPD standards
Assists patients in scheduling appointments
Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA with written and verbal information
Follows computer security regulations
Instructs and supervises dental hygiene students
Takes diagnostic dental images

It is preferred that candidates have their local anesthesia certificate. Incumbents experience with student training programs if useful in this setting. Keyboard/computer experience is very helpful since our patients' dental/medical chart is electronic. Incumbent should be proficient in exposure of dental imaging techniques. Experience of dental specialties such as endodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, geriodontics and prosthodontics if very helpful.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

Experience. At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level GS-08,
that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition,
the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the
potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*)

Skills, and Abilities
1. Skill in performing specialized prophylactic and preventive dental hygiene
procedures;
2. Ability to independently perform expanded dental functions under the
technical guidance of a professional dentist;
*3. Skill in providing individual and group oral health care instructions to
patients and other staff regarding the practice of effective oral hygiene
techniques; and
*4. Skill in presenting oral hygiene lectures and demonstrations, and
developing training materials.
