Functional Statement Title/#: Psychologist/000000
Staff psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group psychotherapics and other interventions such as behavioral health and community interventions. Psychologists consult with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues. Stair psychologists may be involved in program evaluation, teaching, training, and research activities.
Conducts all types of Compensation and Pension (C&P) examinations (IDES, Initial, Review, etc.), each being scheduled for two hours. Most of these examinations involve the two areas of: Initial Mental Disorders and Initial Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The remainder of the examinations may involve: Review Mental Disorders and Review Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
· Administers/scores or evaluates personality, intellectual, and cognitive impairment testing,
including neuropsychological screening on an as needed basis.
· Participates as a member of medical center hospital committees as directed.
· Serves as an advisor, consultant and/or resource person to the staff within the medical center.
· Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening
and completion of clinical reminders for all patients.
· Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for
documentation and proper patient eheck out procedures (e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure
codes).
· Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings as held by CTVHCS and
MH&BM management.
· Attends regular Psychology Service staff meetings, Medical Staff meetings, MH&BM staff
meetings and complies with Psychology Service peer review procedures.
· Provides clinical supervision and instruction for psychology interns as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to hear (hearing aid permitted). Must be mental and emotional stable. Need to be able to work outside, inside and closely with others.
Basic Requirements:
Grandfathering Provision Psychologists previously grandfathered upon conversion to hybrid status effective 3/17/06, continue to be subject to the grandfathering provisions in effect on that date but no additional employees are subject to grandfathering as a result of this revised qualification standard.
If psychologists who are grandfathered under this provision leave the occupation, the employee loses protected status & must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation.
Experience refers to paid & unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) & other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge,& skills & can provide valuable training & experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations: Grade & salaries will be determined by the Professional Standard Board (PSB). Must meet requirements by closing date.

Experience None beyond the basic requirements.
Assignment Staff psychologists at this level diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities, provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders,& may conduct research. They may be assigned to any program area. Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the close supervision of a licensed psychologist.

Experience At least 1 year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS11). Psychologists who are not licensed must practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist but with less intense supervision than at the GS11 grade level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Experience At least 2 years of experience as a professional psychologist, with at least one year equivalent to the GS12 level.
Licensure Hold a full, current,& unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Knowledge of,& ability to apply, professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.
2. Ability to provide professional advice & consultation in areas related to professional psychology & behavioral health.
3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.
Assignment This is the full performance level for staff psychologists. At this level, psychologists are licensed to practice independently in the provision of psychological services, consulting with peers & supervisors as appropriate. They may be assigned to any VHA program & setting, such as inpatient or outpatient medicine, primary care, surgery, mental health, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, Compensation & Pension, Vet Centers,& the VHA National Center for Organization Development.
