The Medical Director of the Hillandale VA Primary Care Clinic (Hillandale CBOC) provides administrative, programmatic, and clinical leadership for primary care services at that location to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals. The incumbent reports to the Associate Chief of Staff for Ambulatory Care Services and serves as a key clinical resource for the Chief of Ambulatory Care Services, along with the Durham VA Medical Center Chief of Staff and others.
This position is a dual clinical and administrative role. The responsibilities include hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the department, including research program and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees. The Medical Director serves as the first line direct on site supervisor for all Patient Aligned Care Teams (PACT) primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

This opportunity seeks a clinical administrator in a 50/50/split assignment. Physician is responsible for delivery of comprehensive primary care to a panel of Veterans. This primary area of responsibility will involve performance of, and documentation of health care delivery for Veterans according to VHA and Durham PC standards. The physician will be fully qualified and certified to function in both a clinical and administrative role and in accordance with the guidelines and policies of the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This individual is delegated the authority and responsibility in his/her area of expertise to assume major clinical, consultative, educational, research, and administrative duties and assignments related to this care.
Position responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
1. Physician - practices comprehensive primary care to a panel of male and female Veterans as a designated woman's health care provider. Approximately 60% of his/her time is dedicated to developing and maintaining an interdisciplinary approach to the direct care of primary care clinic patients in the Primary Care Clinic of the Durham VA. Physician is proficient in all aspects of the primary care of Veterans, including, evaluation of and treatment for medical conditions.
2. The Physician practices as part of a Patient Aligned Care team. He/she collaborates with the other members of the team to provide Veteran-centered, accessible care with a high degree of continuity. He/she incorporates new models of practice, such as telephone care, secure messaging, group clinics and other aspects of the Patient Aligned Care Team model.
3. Administrator Role - Bases planning on patient and staff feedback and projected needs.
4. Plans the provision of services with a patient centered vision so as to enhance patient education and shared decision making.
5. Establishes a customer-oriented culture and promotes hiring of persons who fit that culture.
6. Encourages and supports research and education missions. Facilitates translation of research findings into improved patient outcomes.
7. Responsible for financial management of the department, including budget planning and management.
8. Encourages an atmosphere of trust and empowerment by example.
9. Provides a clear vision of the future and leads the department through necessary changes.

Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
The incumbent is a board certified physician with advanced clinical experience as well as demonstrated administrative and leadership skills. Also, meets the requirements for a faculty appointment at the affiliated medical schools with the Durham VAMC.
The incumbent must have:
(1) Demonstrated commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery
(2) Documented ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs
(3) Management experience with strong administrative and interpersonal skills
(4) Demonstrated skills in providing clinical interface with academic affiliates and other key stakeholders.
