The physician is assigned as a clinician-educator or clinician-researcher to the Hematology/Oncology Section of the Medical Subspecialty Service.
Clinical responsibilities include: outpatient and inpatient duties, supervision of inpatient as well as outpatient chemotherapy and infusion procedures; perform bone marrow aspirates and biopsies and conduct of hemopathology conferences; provide attendance on the Hematology/Oncology consult service; providing consultative support to all inpatient services. The physician also sees continuity and referral of Hem/Onc patients and attends the Fellows clinic when required. For those patients with active cancer or hematologic disease, the physician may serve as the primary physician.
Academic Activities: Academic activities includes serving as principal investigator of clinical trials in the field of specialization, administrative oversight of regulatory requirement and compliances with IRB regulation in human research, development of specialty oncology program, clinical and basic science research effort. The position includes a major role in the clinical, research, administrative and educational programs of the Hematology/Oncology Section. The physician will take part in supervision and education of fellows and residents, participate in didactic sessions, conferences and give presentations and lectures to trainees. The physician provides educational training for Hematology/Oncology Residents and Medical Students. Eligibility for affiliation with the University of Kansas, School of Medicine is required with expectation that the candidate will apply for part-time appointment with the University of Kansas, School of Medicine. Physician is expected to hold an academic faculty appointment at an Assistant Professor level or higher.
Administrative Duties: The physician will also participate in quality improvement initiatives within the division and be part of cancer committee activities. Administrative duties could include serving on hospital and University-affiliated committees.
The physician may also be assigned other administrative or managerial responsibilities through participation in clinical, educational, and research service, task group or special project groups and quality management/quality of care responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires: light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs); light carrying (15 lbs and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
Preferred Experience: Board certified or eligible in Hematology and Oncology; Fellowship from a ACGME accredited program.
Applicants with the following certifications from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) are highly preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). (AHA certification preferred.) The selected employee will be required to receive these certifications prior to assuming clinical responsibilities and ensure current certifications after employment is maintained.
