The WJB Dorn VAMC is currently recruiting for a Nurse Practitioner to work in the Surgery Service, Urology Section. Incumbent provides assessment, treatment, and/or referral services for patients with a wide range of problems. Provides education and/or training for patients/families/residents/staff. Responsibilities include activities considered to be usual nursing practice and selected expanded nursing functions as defined in approved protocols and practice guidelines. Involved in direct patient care, patient and family education as well as staff education and multidisciplinary consultations and collaborations. Facilitates the delivery of patient care in collaboration with all the levels of health care personnel. Conducts extensive coordination with a wide variety of specialties/subspecialties and other special programs to manage urology patient care. Gathers/evaluates data based on patients through history taking, physical exam, diagnostic testing and psychosocial data. Assesses/interprets data and initiates patient care in accordance with approved clinical privileges and in consultation with the supervising physician. Documents assessment process accurately, clearly and concisely when developing initial and ongoing plans for patient care. Consistently demonstrates ability to set appropriate priorities in directing patient care. Functions in an organized, timely, conscientious manner. Accepts substantial and continuing responsibility and accountability for planning, directing and supervising the care of the surgical patient. Participates in medical center, regional, and/or VACO committees as requested. Participates in programs of peer review and continuous quality improvement. Participates in the development, review, and revision of policies/procedures/programs that enhance the care of the veteran patient. Promotes an interdisciplinary approach to health prevention and maintenance programs for the veteran. Effectively interacts with all levels of personnel, physicians, patients and families. Establishes effective relationships within the service with administration and other services. Demonstrates openness to change. Adapts to new routines, procedures, and skills in a positive, constructive manner. Recognizes the age-based needs of adult and geriatric patients and performs her duties appropriately in reference to these needs. Identifies the need for, develops and participates in interdisciplinary education within the VA system and in the community. Maintains competency/certification through continuing education programs. Acts as a resource for other health team members, students, residents. Assess plans and implements health education for patients and/or families and evaluates their effectiveness. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm with occasional on call responsibilities. Subject to change based on agency needs.

Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 pounds); straight pulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); reaching over shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (2 hours); standing (7 hours); kneeling (1 hour); repeated bending (4 hours); both legs required; near vision correctable to 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability required.

-Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
-The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
-Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:Preferred Experience: Urology with at least 2 years of working experience.
