The Documentation Nurse Educator (DNE) is accountable for using a variety of collaborative strategies with Physicians, Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, Physician Assistants, Medical Care Cost Recovery (MCCR), Health Information Management (HIM) staff, and other multidisciplinary team members to ensure the clinical presentation, care, severity of illness, and level of service are accurately reflected in the medical record. A strong, up-to-date clinical background and knowledge base are essential for the incumbent to identify gaps in clinical evidence, trends, commonalities, and disease process. This position focuses on quality improvement in patient outcomes and Medical Care Cost Recovery (MCCR).
· The Documentation Nurse Educator provides leadership through the use of performance improvement methodologies and education strategies to develop formal training improvement programs for the medical/hospital staff concerning clinical documentation opportunities and provides ongoing updates as regulatory, accreditation, and clinical practice guidelines change.
· He/she must possess the ability to work independently in accomplishing assignments and program goals.
· The Documentation Nurse Educator demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to effectively implement staff development programs in support of improving training in the management of complex patient care, clinical documentation, and quality of care.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Practice:
Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to patient care, organizational processes and/or systems improving outcomes at the program or service level. (Technical Skills: HPDM Core Competency). Assists the medical center in determining the educational needs of clinical and non-clinical staff related to clinical documentation improvement, collaborates with medical and nonmedical staff, nursing staff, CPAC/MACPAC, HIMS and Coding to promote learning experiences for all personnel regarding the achievement of quality patient documentation of care. Assumes leadership for the extensive interactions with physicians and mid-level providers to address the need for more detailed information in the medical record as documentation needs arise to maximize reimbursement efforts. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with professional, administrative and technical staff within the Medical Center, VHA, and professional organizations.
Ethics:
Supports and enhances client self-determination. Provides leadership in identifying and addressing ethical issues that impact Veterans and staff, including initiating and participating in ethics consultations. Serves as a role model and guides staff in the observance of confidentiality and security related to information systems and medical record documentation.
Resource Utilization:
Manages program resources (financial, human, material and informational). Assures equipment is safe and functional and takes appropriate actions if equipment is malfunctioning. Monitors other staff for adherence to safe work practice and takes appropriate action. Reports to the supervisor as promptly as possible, unsafe conditions, unsafe practices or any occupational illness or injury, which is sustained. Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations and work practices and uses proper protective equipment as required. Observes safety practices, maintains safe work environment and verbalizes procedures for reporting unsafe conditions and ensuring corrective action to prevent potential hazardous situations.
The nurse reports directly to the Clinical Applications Coordinator/Health Information Specialist Supervisor for day-to-day responsibilities.
The incumbent will perform other directly related duties as assigned.
The selected candidate will work Monday Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with on-call duties required (evenings/weekends), as necessary.
