The incumbent will conduct research to identify and characterize the mechanisms, genes, QTL, molecular markers, and traits underlying abiotic (heat, cold, drought, and salt) stress tolerance in lettuce for adaptation to climate change. The incumbent will conduct QTL mapping and study the gene expression and inheritance of stress tolerance traits. As well as incorporate the beneficial traits into new lettuce cultivars. The incumbent will adapt, modify or develop new methods, techniques and/or tools to satisfy the needs of the research.

This position requires a Ph.D in Plant Genetics, Breeding, Horticulture, Crop Science, Agronomy, Biological Science or a related field of study that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics and has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Experience with gene expression analysis and quantitative real-time PCR (primer design, assay verification, and trouble shooting) is required.
Knowledge of contemporary approaches to gene identification, mapping, and sequencing, current methods and techniques used in plant abiotic stress physiology, genomic studies, RNA-seq, plant breeding, genetics, experimental design, statistical analysis, and/or lettuce research is preferred but not required.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
