VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services, and will soon be providing care in a new state-of-the-art hospital in Aurora, CO. ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 89,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. The Eastern Colorado Health Care System is a 1a-level VA medical center with a broad-ranging and complex surgical service offering a variety of clinical specialty services including the following surgical disciplines: General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology, Podiatry, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Otolaryngology. The Assistant Chief of Surgical Services is responsible for assisting with the overall operation and supervision of this complex surgical service including administrative facilitation of clinical care, enhancing operating room efficiency, resident education, medical staff leadership, research, quality improvement, maintenance of reusable medical equipment, and the provision of excellent inpatient and outpatient care. He/she insures national, network, and local missions, values, vision, and performance measures are supported and met, provides efficient management of resources and budgetary constraints, facilities a collaborative team environment, develops orientation and training of pertinent clinical staff under the service, and proactively identifies needs and concerns of the service.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
The Assistant Chief of Surgical Services is responsible for:
· Assuring the timely and appropriate medical care of VA patients within the Service.
· Supervising the technical and ancillary staff in their respective duties within the Service, for mentoring medical students, and Surgery residents or fellows rotating through the Service (monitoring their progress and assessing their appropriate core competencies or School objectives).
· Providing expert professional and consultation services in his/her specialty, guiding referring clinicians in the associated complexities and proper uses of surgical diagnosis and therapeutic interventions.
· Implementing all appropriate quality assurance and improvement measures on an on-going basis.
Represents the service on important Medical Center committees with influence on patient care, teaching, and research and closely monitors all other committees on which surgery and specialty care service has representation.
Plays a pivotal interactive role with quality/outcome measurement systems that are in place as integrated improvement tools. Assures that data collection is accurate and verified and that the returned aggregated data elements are communicated to the appropriate process owners and providers.
CLINICAL DUTIES
Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with medical and surgical diseases, accomplished through ambulatory and bed-based resources assigned to the service of the surgeon's specialty. Actively participates in patient care through hospital rounds, morning reports, conferences, consultations, participation in ambulatory care, and other similar activities.

Physical Requirements:
