The Flight Projects Directorate, Joint Polar Satellite System Flight Project (Code 472) is seeking highly skilled individuals to serve as Instrument Managers for the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), or the Cross Track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) instrument development efforts. These instruments are complex instrument development activities which involves defining operational requirements, researching, developing, performing analysis, integrating, and evaluating aerospace and aeronautical flight systems, vehicles, and payloads as a part of the development of some or all aspects of flight systems or projects.

As an Aerospace Engineer, specializing in Aerospace Flight System, you will serve as an Instrument Manager within the Joint Polar Satellite System Flight Project. You will provide technical advice and direction to contractor professionals in areas such as flight systems, the fabrication or composition of materials and structures, power, electrical systems, flight software systems, complex structural/mechanical systems, detector and detector module subassemblies, and ASICs (application specific integrated circuits); serve as a senior technical contact and/or Contracting Officer's representative; resolve unusual demands caused by extraordinary urgency, safety, or economic restraints; establish and monitor content, cost, schedule requirements for required products, deliverables, and services; manage significant elements or phases of projects related to major agency functions, programs, or projects; ensure technology development is on track, provide expertise as needed, integrate and coordinate across organizations to ensure compliance; support mission requirements and initiate design and modification efforts as necessary; and be responsible for operation, maintenance, and sustaining engineering planning and execution across all instrument developments (JPSS-1, JPSS-2, JPSS-3, and JPSS-4).
You will direct a broad range of inter-disciplinary aerospace engineering development and design activities; make recommendations and implement actions involving highly complex aerospace engineering technical problems, including those that apply to controversial or unusual integrated systems; defines unknown conditions, resolves critical problems, or develops new theories; conduct conceptual definition studies and complex detailed analyses, to establish preliminary designs and alternatives, for a variety of advanced systems on proposed new projects for which no precedents are available; and identify alternative approaches or compromises to develop the most cost effective technical solutions.
